How do I configure my Gomadic Cable to work with Nextel's Network?

With Nextel, you need to provide your own ISP to dial out to for Internet access.  Simply follow the directions above for Pocket PC or Palm OS configuration.  If you don't have an ISP, many Gomadic customers have had excellent success using Free ISP services from www.access4free.com!

Where do I download drivers for my Gomadic USB to Serial Adapter?

You can download the driver here.  Please use the following directions for configuration:

1.  Download and run the PC_Driver.exe file.  This will save a new folder called PC Driver on your computer

2.  Plug in your Gomadic USB to Serial Adapter plug

3.  Point Windows to the PC Driver folder (note:  The folder and not the PC_Driver.exe file) for the appropriate drivers.

4.  Let Windows go through it's installation routine.  Windows will "warn" you that the drivers are not certified.  Please select Continue.

5.  After the drivers have installed, go to device manager.  You may access device manager by Right clicking "My Computer" on your desktop, selecting the Hardware tab and pushing the device manager button.

6.  Expand the Ports section

7.  Right click the "Prolific USB to Serial Bridge" port and select Properties

8.  Select the Port Settings Tab

9.  Set the Port speed to 19200 and Flow Control to Hardware

10.  Select OK and your USB to serial Adapter is installed!

I followed the directions correctly, however, when I try to connect, nothing happens on my phone.

Usually when there is no communication between your PDA and your phone, one of the following configuration issues exist:

1.  If connecting with a high-speed capable phone, often the connection speed that you have set up on your handheld is different from the speed settings on the phone.  An examples of this would be the phone is configured to connect at 115,200 Kbps, but the PDA is set to 19,200.  To resolve this, make sure the two speeds are set to match.  Please note that many high speed phones default to 115200 speeds (especially LG's!)

2.  If you are using a phone that is selectable between USB and serial, please make sure the phone is set to serial (ie. RS232).  If you are using an LG or Audiovox phone, try the following sequence.

For LG5350, Menu, 8, 9, 4, 2 (should be set to RS232 and NOT USB).

For VX4400, Menu, 8, 6, 2 (should be set to RS232 and NOT USB).

For LG VX6000/4500/4600/5450, Menu, 9, 6, 2 (should be set to RS232 and NOT USB).

For Audiovox 8900/8410 (AKA VI600).  Please follow the following sequence:

  1. Flip open your phone and make sure you are at the main screen
  2. Press “##7678” or “##PORT” followed by the “end call key”
  3. Press down and press “ok” to enter the data menu
  4. Scroll over RS232C and press the “ok” key (a confirmation screen should tell you RS232C is activated)
  5. Press the “end call key” to take you back to the main screen
  6. Press “##2283” or “##BAUD” followed by the “end call key”
  7. scroll over 115200 and press the “ok” key (a confirmation screen should tell you 115200 is activated)
  8. It should then automatically take you to the main screen

2.  If you sometimes connect an external keyboard to your computer, you need to make sure the software is disabled.  Keyboards tend to "hog" the baseport of the PDA and prevent the phone from dialing through the port.  Once the software is disabled, this issue is usually resolved.

3.  The physical connections are not making proper contact.  Make sure the connections are securely attached to the cube, the PDA and phone.

My phone will dial, but it's dialing the wrong number (Force to local call instructions)

Make sure that it is forcing a local call.  To do this, go Start, Settings, Connection Tab, Connection Icon, Dialing Locations tab, Dialing Patterns.  In each of the fields, delete everything but the letter G.  When complete, press OK, then Connection Tab and try connecting again.

I received an "Authentication Error" when dialing.

Re-enter your user name and password.

Note:  If you are getting this error trying to use Verizon's #777 service, please try the following changes:

On Pocket PC systems:  Add an extra dial string of AT$QCMDR=2 (for Veirzon's free qnc service) and AT$QCMDR=3 (for Verizon's Expressnet).

On Palm-based systems: Try the following scripts.

For Verizon's free qnc service:

Send: AT$QCMDR=2

Send CR:

How does the PocketPC/PalmOS PDA cellular cable work?

Using the PDAs' serial communications port usually located on the bottom of the PDA where the cradle connects. The cellular phone also has a serial communications port usually located on the bottom of the phone where the power charger plugs into. The connection between the PDA and cellular phone is made using our ComCube and is the link that allows the cellular phone to be used as a "modem." The PDA than can dial to your ISP anywhere your Cellular phone has reception.

Do I need extra software to use Gomadic's PDA to Mobile Phone Wireless Internet Cables?

You do not need extra software to be able to dial-out to the internet with your Gomadic cable, however, you will need a POP3 email client and a web browser to be able to read email and surf the web respectively.  An email client can be downloaded for free from www.eudora.com, and a browser can be obtained from dozens of shareware locations.

To make the connection to the Internet, you will use both the modem and network program which are already installed on your Visor under the "Preferences" application.

Do I need to pay an extra monthly fee for wireless web service to use this cable?

Whether there is an extra fee or not depends entirely on your mobile service provider.  Some require a small extra monthly fee, however, they also allow you to use them as your ISP as well.  Gomadic would recommend that you check with your service provider regarding this as no uniform standards are in place.

I can not get my cable to connect to work properly.

First action to take is to power cycle your phone (ie. turn the phone off and then on again) and try to connect again.  Power cycling the phone, resets the internal modem to the default settings and will often resolve many connectivity issues.  The configuration of the ComCube can be tricky.  Please take some time to follow the configuration instructions posted in the support section above.  If you are still unable to connect, please fill out this short form and one of our technical support engineers will contact you to help guide you through the process quickly.

When I try to connect, my phone dials, however, eventually I receive a "Modem Not Found" error message.

Usually when this happens, it is because your account is not set up to support data with your mobile phone service provider.  Please call your service provider and tell them that you want to connect your laptop to your phone to dial-out to the internet (a laptop/phone connection is functionally the equivalent to a PDA/phone one, however more familiar to most call center representatives.)  Verify with that your account is set up properly to support this type of connection.  If you still have problem afterwards, please fill out this short form and one of our technical support engineers will contact you to help guide you through the process quickly.

Can I plug my iPAQ's AC Adapter in while the Power Sync cable is attached?

No.  Since the iPAQ get's power from the cable, plugging an additional power could cause damage to the device.  If the cable is plugged in, however, there is no need to also plug your iPAQ in using the AC source since it will be charging already.

Do you have Power Sync cables for other PDA devices?

Currently we only have this type of cable available for the iPAQ, however, we are in the process of adding other PDA's to our product line in the near future.

What is the difference between a Power Sync cable and a regular Sync cable?

A Power Sync cable charges and syncs your iPAQ at the same time.  A regular sync cable does not charge your device.

Do I need special software to use this cable?

No.  This cable requires no additional software.
